Understanding Basics Theory

Photography is very hard subject to study. It may seem very easy because all you have to do is to push that button but there are so many things happening under the hood. So, you should have the basic understanding as an amateur, how camera works more specifically how light works in that little black box.

The first thing that is to understand is exposure. Exposure describes how light is exposed to your camera to capture that perfect moment. Controlling the light to capture a photo is the main idea of exposure. Now there are three things that is related to exposure which are Aperture, ISO and Shutter speed. Roughly said all of these stuffs are related to controlling the light that is coming towards the camera. All of these features have values which dictates different level of controlling of these features.

Aperture values in general shows as a number of “f” for instance f/1.4 also the starting of “f” value these go all the way to f/22. The smaller value tells you that the aperture is in wide focal length which means more light can pass through the aperture. Its like a hole reside in the camera lens. The wider focal length gives you shallow depth of field blurry background and narrower gives you deep depth of field which shows both foreground and background is clear.

The next thing is shutter speed. You can guess that its about the speed of shutter. Normally fractions of seconds in case if its not for the longer exposure. Its generally start from 1 second to fractions of seconds for instance 1/500, 1/1000 the higher the value the more light can get inside of your camera. Low shutter speed like 1/30 gives you still photo, high shutter speed gives you motion in your photo. Pretty nit huh!

The last but foremost thing is ISO it tells you the light captured by the camera sensor, starting value from the 100 to thousands. If the value set to higher then the image is more, noisy because of all of those lights which makes the photo digitally grained.

Do Experiment

Photography is experiment based learning process. Trying different sorts of technique, combination of settings will give you divergent taste in your photo. Also attempt different perspective in your photography. Different angle can give you distinct characteristic of the same composition. Make sure you take photo regularly. Take photo from different distance from your subject. Move yourself instead of zooming the lens. Practice with prime lens in the beginning will give you the idea what’s really going on with the camera. How aperture, shutter speed, ISO working can only be understood by trying different combination of them. Also comprehending your surrounding with sharper eye can give you extra advantage.
